5 Attributes Our Partners Look for in Potential Scholars

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Tips series answers the most frequently asked questions about applying for scholarships at our partner institutions. The application process is rigorous but important, giving applicants the opportunity to shine. A question that we receive most often is, what are our partner institutions looking for in a potential scholar?

We spoke to our partner institutions and asked them what traits make a person stand out in their application. Here are the five attributes our partner institutions look for in a potential scholar.

1.  Academic excellence

If you have done well academically, this will take you far. Each institution has different academic requirements, so please make sure that you find a program that matches your academic performance.

2. Leadership potential

At the core of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program lies a commitment to nurturing leaders who will drive positive change in their communities. Academic excellence is crucial, but leadership potential is equally important. Mastercard Foundation Scholars must demonstrate past leadership experiences and showcase the potential for future leadership roles. Our Partners emphasize the different elements of leadership assessment, including work experience and community-level engagement. This involves evaluating what applicants have accomplished and their vision for future leadership.

3. Community engagement

Mastercard Foundation Scholars are not just Scholars but change-makers committed to bettering their communities. Araba Botchway, Program Manager, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Ashesi University, shares, “We’re looking for a commitment to your community, and this commitment extends beyond geographic boundaries.” Partners are looking for anything that sets prospective applicants apart, and community work and extracurricular activities play a crucial role in making a decision.

4. Self-awareness

Every Mastercard Foundation Scholar has a unique journey; sharing that narrative is crucial to the selection process. Our partners encourage applicants to reflect on their life stories, focusing on educational barriers faced and aspects that fueled their academic thriving. Clearly articulating personal challenges and triumphs contributes significantly to helping partners assess eligibility. This approach ensures a holistic understanding of the individual beyond academic achievements. In putting together your application, let the partners know who you are and, perhaps more importantly, why you.

5. Unique perspective

Mastercard Foundation Scholars are not just academically excellent; they also bring a unique perspective. Chloe Sautter of Sciences Po highlights the importance of seeking individuals with ideas about how they want to make an impact. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to equip Scholars with the tools they need to turn their ideas into reality, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives contribute to meaningful change.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is not just about academic achievement; it’s about fostering leaders with a commitment to the community, a compelling life story, and a unique perspective. Your journey starts with showcasing what you’ve accomplished, who you are, and how you aspire to shape the world.
