A Message from the President and CEO

Listening to George Floyd’s last words, “I can’t breathe” filled me with anger and anguish. The demonstrations that have exploded across the United States and spread globally are not only an expression of grief, but also a denunciation of racism.

Racism is evil.  It is as blatant as it is subtle.  In these times, we are reminded that we live in a world where the systems and institutions that should serve all of us, irrespective of what we look like, where we were born, our economic status, or the colour of our skin, don’t always do so.

So, what can we do?

We can speak out. Register our disapproval when we hear comments and jokes that perpetuate prejudice and intolerance.

We can talk with our children about what it means to respect all people.

We can engage as citizens.  Hold accountable those we elect to represent us.

We can have that conversation.

Many of us have experienced racism. I have. Certainly, many people who our programs serve understand this.  It’s cruel and unfair.  Yet, we defy racism when we refuse to allow it to diminish who we are – our values, our talents, our accomplishments and above all, our humanity.

Amid troubled times, our Foundation must remain a light. Our vision – creating opportunity for all to learn and prosper – resonates deeply in this hour.  Our work expands the space for diverse voices to be heard and opportunities for millions to have a better life.

We do so as a community who values and respects the diversity of views, lived experiences, and cultures that we represent and uphold.

And, we are not alone.  We join with thousands around the world, who are promoting social and economic inclusion, thereby promoting equity and dignity for all.
