Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada
A statement from Reeta Roy, President and CEO
Today, the Mastercard Foundation acknowledges and celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada, marked every year on June 21. We at the Foundation are both proud and humbled by our work with Indigenous partners across the country. We share a commitment to supporting pathways for Indigenous youth through education and livelihoods that reflect their traditions, values, and aspirations. We recognize that the complex challenges facing Indigenous young people and communities require solutions that are grounded in their own expertise and experience. We recognize Indigenous youth as powerful agents of change.
Through our EleV program, the Mastercard Foundation is committed to supporting a generation of Indigenous youth to complete post-secondary education and achieve the goal expressed in the Anishinaabe word Mino Bimaadiziwin – “to live a good life.” On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we reaffirm our commitment to walk alongside Indigenous young people towards a stronger, fairer, and more sustainable society they envision.
