Mastercard Foundation Amplifies Youth Voices at Annual Ibrahim Governance Weekend in Kenya

Zein Abdalla speaking at with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation

The Mastercard Foundation’s work and impact were spotlighted when the Foundation participated in one of Africa’s most prestigious conventions.

The Ibrahim Governance Weekend (IGW), a flagship event of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, is a three-day conference that convenes prominent African political and business leaders, representatives from civil society, multilateral and regional institutions, as well as Africa’s major international partners to debate issues of critical importance to Africa.

The annual event is held in a different African country, with this year’s cycle taking place in Nairobi, Kenya. Discussions centred around the theme of #GlobalAfrica.

Mastercard Foundation Board Chair Zein Abdalla was part of a five-person panel moderated by Mo Ibrahim, Founder and Chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. Besides our Board Chair, the panel included William Asiko, Managing Director of the Africa Region Office at the Rockefeller Foundation; Gayle Smith, CEO of ONE Campaign; Alexander Soros, Chair of the Board of the Open Society Foundations; and Mark Suzman, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The discussion, titled The World in Africa: A Growing Competition (non-state actors), focused on the multiplicity of non-state actors engaging with the continent, their primary areas of interest, and various modes of engagement.
