November 4, 2024: Like so many across Canada, we are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Anishinaabe advocate, Senator, and Justice Murray Sinclair, Mizhana Gheezhik. Murray Sinclair was an icon. An intellectual, an Elder, a man who thought deeply about the history and the future of this country, about the relationship between the First Peoples and the newcomers, and how we can forge a path forward together.
The Mastercard Foundation’s programs with Indigenous youth takes their inspiration from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission that Justice Sinclair chaired. Its poignant calls to action compelled us to play a role in the essential work of reconciliation between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians. Justice Sinclair spoke with passion about the role education must play in repairing the damage of the past and restoring and revitalizing Indigenous languages, cultures, and Nations. His guidance was gentle, yet crystal clear, as he encouraged us to continue to listen to Indigenous youth as they would lead us in the right way.
Murray Sinclair will be missed as will his insights, dedication, and good humour. His powerful legacy, profound words, wisdom, and writings will always be with us. They will continue to guide us towards the brighter future he envisioned.
We convey our sincere condolences to his family, friends, community, and the thousands of people he inspired.
