Young women in marginalized communities in Kenya face immense challenges that prevent them from accessing economic opportunities and having the lives they desire. In West Pokot in Northwest Kenya, for example, young women face discriminatory practices of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriages. Those who manage to escape these are the exception.
But a league of young, strong women, who ran away from home at a very young age to escape these practices, and into a Rescue Centre, before joining an economic empowerment program run by Global Give Back Circle are helping to change this. Their stories of courage and resilience have made them strong role models, change-makers, and respected members of their community which they are working hard to transform.
Global Give Back Circle, in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, is implementing an economic empowerment hub, ‘HER Lab’ designed to address the workforce-readiness needs of rural young women. Part of it, a Journalizing program is also helping uncover good insights that will advise the design of programs that support young rural women to access what they see as dignified and fulfilling work.
