Empowering Young Girls to Speak Out: The Tuseme Club Model

Named after the Swahili word “Tuseme,” meaning “let’s speak out,” Tuseme Clubs empower young girls to speak out against the gender-based challenges they face that can be significant barriers to their education.

The Tuseme Club model is implemented under the Imarisha Msichana program, a partnership between FAWE Africa and Mastercard Foundation aimed at significantly reducing teenage pregnancy in Kenya as a major barrier to adolescent girls and young women’s participation in quality education.

Since the inception of Tuseme Clubs in 2022, the program has established 160 clubs in selected schools across 20 counties in Kenya. Focusing on teen mothers between 9 to 18 years old and young women aged 19 to 25 years old, especially adolescent girls with disabilities and displaced/refugee girls, the clubs advocate against teenage pregnancies, child marriage and other retrogressive cultural practices that happen within the community setups by equipping girls with the knowledge and skills to grow and effectively participate in their society.

Watch the video below to see how the Tuseme Club in Suswa Girls Secondary School in Narok County is impacting the lives of young girls and encouraging them to speak out against the issues that affect them.
