Increase Access to Secondary Education and Skills Development and Transition to Job Opportunities for Refugee and Host Community Youth

Target Impact

The program was designed improve access to quality and relevant education and skills for over 73,000 (70% young women) refugees, and host community youth in 8 districts, and transition 38,912 to dignified and fulfilling work by 2027.

 

Target: 39,000 Youth in Work

 

Geographical Location: 9 refugee host communities in Western and Northern Uganda (Adjumani, Obongi, Kamwenge, Isingiro, Kikube, Terego, Madi Okollo, and Koboko)

  1. Increased access to market-relevant secondary and tertiary education and skills for refugee and host community youth
  2. Improved capacity of education institutions and teachers to offer quality and relevant education and skills.

Developed the Accelerated Education Program  (AEP) lower secondary curriculum that was approved by the National Curriculum Development Centre. 225 teachers trained on AEP curriculum.

Established 34 Accelerated Education Centres that are operational and functional across the 8 districts; deployed 300  teachers across the learning centres.

Local Civil Society Organizations trained on Business Incubation Boot camps –  336 undergoing training

Local Civil Society Organizations have been trained in Business incubation to conduct business bootcamps  for young people.  At least 449  learners have participated in the  boot camps acquiring skills to start and grow their enterprises.

Trained and established school-based STEM clubs in 34 Accelerated Education Program centers and oriented  Community Education Committees to support learners  during their studies.

In Partnership With

War Child Canada, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, is implementing a bridge project that aims to increase young people’s access to quality and relevant education and skills using the Accelerated Education Program approach in lower secondary education and to help them transition into TVET and higher education institutions to prepare them for work. War Child Canada works with two civil society organizations and eight refugee-based organisations to implement the program in eight refugee host districts.
