The 73 Startups transforming Education in the WAEMU Region

April 2024: Etudesk, with the support of the Mastercard Foundation’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, unveils a study dedicated to the EdTech ecosystem in the WAEMU.

This research aims to identify and analyze the mechanisms and dynamics of this burgeoning sector. The youthful population and economic growth of the member countries make this region an ideal ground for educational advancements through technology.

The report highlights a dynamic, though challenging, environment for EdTech startups, particularly facing issues such as lack of funding, digital skills gaps, and limited governmental collaboration. Despite these hurdles, numerous innovative solutions have emerged to improve access to education, its quality, and relevance.

The study underscores the critical importance of local EdTech entrepreneurs and technology hubs that develop tailor-made solutions for the specific educational needs of the region. It also emphasizes the essential role of partnerships with educational stakeholders and governments to integrate EdTech solutions into existing systems and ensure a lasting impact.

The research methodology relies on online and in-person interviews, analysis of previous reports, and a workshop that brought together all stakeholders in Abidjan in December 2023. Key findings highlight regional disparities that influence EdTech potential. The study profiled 73 EdTech startups, categorizing them based on their services,
business models, client types, and funding.

In conclusion, the report offers practical recommendations for reassessing digital education policies, training of stakeholders, development of digital skills, public-private partnerships, and support for entrepreneurial ecosystems. The future looks promising, with emerging synergies between governments and startups, advances in mobile learning, and the potential of AI in personalized education. However, regional political instability remains a concern, underscoring the importance of EdTech solutions to ensure the continuity of education.
