Dr. Segenet Kelemu

Segenet is a globally recognized scientist and leader in agricultural biosciences, with expertise in molecular plant pathology and sustainable farming. She was the first woman to lead the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), where she served as Director General & CEO, strengthening its global presence and advancing insect-based solutions for food and nutrition security, human health and capacity strengthening.
Her career spans pioneering research and institutional leadership, including directing the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub, where she built a world-class research facility, and leading key programs at AGRA that support African farmers and agricultural systems.
A graduate of Addis Ababa University, Segenet was the first woman from her region to attend university. She holds advanced degrees in molecular plant pathology from Montana State University, Kansas State University, and Cornell University. Her groundbreaking work includes innovations in plant disease resistance and biopesticide production.
Segenet is a passionate advocate for gender equality in science, mentoring young researchers globally. Her leadership has earned her numerous honours, including the L’Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Award, Women Economic Forum’s Woman of the Decade Award, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. She also serves on prestigious boards, including the Stockholm Environment Institute and the UN Food Systems Hub.
