International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE)

Founded in 1968 and headquartered in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 2iE is a shared investment across sixteen francophone countries: a non-profit, inter-state training and research institution co-governed by its member states across West and Central Africa. 2iE has more than 2,000 on-campus students each year, thousands of learners in vocational and online training programs representing more than twenty African nationalities, and over a hundred academic, scientific, sectoral, and strategic partnerships worldwide. 2iE is a pan-African institution, designed to train engineers, doctorates, technicians, and entrepreneurs to address shared challenges in water, sanitation, hydro agricultural development, environment, climate, energy, and infrastructure, particularly in the Sahel region

Its model is defined by a strongly practical orientation, where teaching and learning are grounded in African realities and closely linked to real-world problem solving in complex and resource-constrained contexts.

The goal of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at 2iE, is to build in Sub-Saharan francophone countries a network of transformative leaders driving the development of user-friendly, cost-effective, and inclusive SMART engineering solutions in the fields of water, sanitation, energy, and construction.
