Disability & Inclusion
Disability Inclusion is central to the realization of the Mastercard Foundation’s mission to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to learn and prosper. This mission recognizes that education and employment are fundamental rights that should be accessible to all, regardless of ability.
Youth with disabilities face systemic barriers to accessing education and employment in Africa. These barriers can be cultural, infrastructural, or economic, and they contribute to an alarming loss of potential. When young individuals with disabilities are unable to participate fully in the workforce, it creates an immeasurable loss in the contributions of their talent, skills and lived experiences towards Africa’s economic transformation. Their underutilization not only affects the individuals, but limits innovation and progress within communities, countries, and the continent.
Our work in Disability Inclusion is a key part of the Foundation’s Young Africa Works strategy, which aims to enable 30 million young Africans to access dignified and fulfilling work by 2030. We recognize that achieving this objective is not just about creating job opportunities; it’s about ensuring that these opportunities are equitable and accessible to all, including those with disabilities. We believe the leadership, diverse skillsets, and perspectives of youth with disabilities catalyzes innovative solutions and approaches. By empowering these young individuals, we not only support their personal growth but also contribute to a more equitable and dynamic economy. Their leadership will drive a vibrant, accessible, and inclusive future of work.
