Lilian Amponsaa Boateng's Educational Journey
Growing up as a girl in a close-knit family of six, I was passionate about leading and living a life worthy of praise by God and others. I always strived for excellence in all I did. My academic journey has been relatively smooth, despite some challenges along the way. I owe everything to God for His unwavering love, guidance, and support. I am also deeply grateful to my family and friends who became my backbone during difficult times. May their cups run over.
I was raised in an environment with limited financial resources, but peace and harmony were our hallmarks. We were content with the little we had and always made the most of it. The schools I attended from crèche to high school were based on what we could afford, but the most amazing part was that I always came out with excellent grades. During my school days, I engaged in several extracurricular activities to boost my confidence and develop new skills, especially in areas where I felt I lacked.
After completing senior high school in 2018, I was accepted to study a BSc. Human Settlement Planning at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), one of the best universities in Ghana. KNUST played a key role in shaping my life as I was equipped with knowledge and skills to solve issues related to environmental inequality and injustice in Ghana. My goal is to contribute efficiently and effectively to the country's development.
As the first university graduate from my maternal home, I was privileged to graduate as one of the best students in my class. I was selected to serve as a Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Planning. This role allowed me to work alongside professionals and deepen my knowledge in both teaching and research.
Driven by a relentless desire for success, I began seeking opportunities to learn, grow, and achieve my passion. I set out to further my education at leading institutions abroad. Despite my efforts, securing full funding became my greatest obstacle. But with a never-give-up spirit, I tried again and came across the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cambridge. I applied and waited patiently.
It was with great joy that I received news of my admission to the University and support from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program to pursue an MPhil in Planning, Growth, and Regeneration. I accepted the offer immediately, without hesitation, knowing that my hard work had finally paid off.
Being a Mastercard Foundation Scholar at the University of Cambridge is a dream come true and a remarkable opportunity that anyone would be privileged to have. I am immensely grateful to the Mastercard Foundation for this honour and hope to make the best of this opportunity and contribute meaningfully throughout the journey.
