Akoben: Stories of Impact. Tales of Courage is a series that speaks about the power of education as a tool for transformative change in the world. They are told through the lens of Mastercard Foundation Scholars and Alumni. Here is Hillary’s story.
Growing up in Accra, Hillary Eyram Anyomi often felt like an outsider. She struggled with low self-esteem due to being bullied for her appearance. Despite this, Hillary feels the experience bolstered her resilience and empowered her to rise above criticism.
“I didn’t really enjoy my childhood like every child should. I felt different for many reasons, including being the only dark one in my family. I would often get teased with names like boy-girl, man-woman, etc. Although to my teasers, it was all jokes, it affected me emotionally. However, this has strengthened me because I don’t get bothered when people criticize me.”
During these formative years, Hillary’s aspiration to become a strategy consultant began to take shape.
Hillary embarked on a journey of personal growth, channelling her energy into internships, volunteering, and community involvement. She actively participated in the English Immersion Program and the Local Conference of Youth in Ghana. These experiences enriched her understanding of the world and fueled her passion for driving change.
Before her enrollment at Ashesi University, Hillary heard many testimonials about the institution that would eventually become her academic home. She was drawn to the prospect of studying at Ashesi, envisioning it as a platform to improve her life and contribute meaningfully to society.
Her journey at Ashesi University was not without its trials. Hillary struggled in her first year due to friendships with individuals who had different goals from hers. She also felt exceptionally supported as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, which, at times, led to a sense of comfort and reduced accountability. This, in turn, impacted her motivation to learn and, subsequently, her academic performance.
Reflecting on her growth, Hillary emphasizes the importance of cultivating a supportive environment. She understands the significance of surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals who share the same desire to grow and learn. In her second year, Hillary actively sought positive influences and formed friendships with those who shared her enthusiasm for achievement. She firmly believes that with dedicated effort, success is attainable.
Hillary offers the following advice to prospective Scholars:
Research about the scholarship and what it entails. Invest your all into the application process and the essay. Look at essay samples. Ask questions, contact the admissions office, talk to them. Don’t lie, be real.”
Hillary’s dream of becoming a strategy consultant is fueled by her desire to assist businesses in achieving sustainable growth. She aims to help startups navigate their initial stages and guide them toward long-term success, ensuring their growth trajectories extend beyond the critical five-year mark.
Hillary’s journey is one of determination and a deep commitment to change. Her experiences serve as a reminder that obstacles are but stepping stones on the path to greatness and that the pursuit of excellence is a journey well worth taking as she continues to pave her way toward a career as a strategy consultant.
